What Degree Should You Choose? Art Or Science?

There’s always been a healthy rivalry among science and art degrees in universities and colleges. If you are an artist, you are teased about getting a ‘useless’ degree. Scientists get mocked for being ‘nerds’. It is your decision to determine if one is superior to the other. In this article we’ll talk about some of the pros and cons for each.

What is Art?

Without getting directly into a formal explanation, art is the the development of something which impacts the emotions, senses or intellect. You can do this by way of any medium you can imagine. Probably the most traditionally chosen are music, dance, painting, and writing. All humans have an innate need for art, which is the reason there are many that are successful in pursuing a career in artistic fields.

If you are of an artistic turn of mind, you may want to consider having a career related to the arts. There are a variety of degrees and careers to consider. For example, you could go into performance art, or even do something more practical like graphic art. You should know, though, that unless you pick something like graphic art, it will be incredibly difficult for you to break into the art profession of your choice. You will find very few of the millions of artists out there who make it big. Also, most artists don’t make very much money unless they are widely-known. In general, artists don’t mind this sacrifice in monetary benefits because of the creative fulfillment they feel. And if they need more money, scholarships for college are available to those that need financial aid for school. The choice is not hard.

The Sciences

Science is basically the study of the laws of nature and the universe. Our function as humans within the galaxy could be better understood by means of the exploration of science. Science is also a necessary part of our survival as humans.

You’ll find lots of scientific areas from which to choose. Biology, geography, statistics, chemistry, physics, biophysics, the list continues on and on! Depending on the particular field, you are most likely to earn a very good income and find an excellent work. The most complicated part of working within a scientific field is the fact that a lot of positions call for up to a Ph.D.

Will the debate between art and science ever end? Probably not. The most we can hope for is that the two find a truce and learn to work together. Employment in either side will provide an excellent and rewarding career to anyone.
